A name given to the resource
World War I at Southwestern University
Description
An account of the resource
In 1918, during World War I, the United States War Department created the Student Army Training Corps (SATC) program to help fill positions in the military with trained men. Implemented at hundreds of universities across the nation, the SATC combined both practical and lecture-based military instruction with the general college curriculum. The intended goal was to create a viable population of educated and trained young men who would then join the U.S. military and fight in the war. Southwestern University was one of the colleges with an SATC chapter, which was only active during the fall semester of 1918; Germany’s formal surrender in November rendered its purpose moot. However, as the World War I collection shows, the SATC was a highly valued part of campus life during its existence.

The collection of World War I materials from Special Collections prominently features documentation related to the SATC, which is highlighted here on our site. This collection gives us a clear idea of the amount of effort it took to establish, organize, and run this federal military recruitment program. Among these items are correspondence between individuals and institutions, grade reports, photographs of SATC students, curriculum outlines, and pamphlets. Although military instruction was the impetus for the creation of the program, academics were meant to be the central component of the SATC, as shown by the many education-related pamphlets, notices, and letters. The amount of highly detailed correspondence between various agencies, including Southwestern University, the University of Texas at Austin, the U.S. Naval Reserve, and the War Department, is tangible evidence of the value placed on this program by its founding institutions.

You can also find these items on the University of North Texas's Portal to Texas History.

A name given to the resource
Johnson Family Papers
Description
An account of the resource
The Johnson family, originally from Missouri, came to Texas in 1844, moving several times before finally settling in Hays County. Thomas Johnson and his wife, Catherine Johnson, had six children. Thomas Johnson, a schoolmaster, established the Johnson Institute in 1852, thirty miles north of San Marcos. The Johnson Institute was a private secondary school with a coeducational student body. Three of the Johnson children would later teach there. A family member of particular interest is the daughter, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ellen Johnson, born on May 9, 1840 in Cole County, Missouri.

The Johnson Family Collection, dating from the years 1859-1887, was donated to Southwestern University by John E. Shelton, grandson of Emma Johnson, sister of Lizzie Johnson. It consists of letters, personal notes, announcements, newspaper clippings, magazines, books, and personal objects from the entire Johnson family. Highlighted here is Lizzie Johnson’s incoming correspondence, which includes invitations to parties, letters from close friends, and marriage proposals. This selection of items gives us an insightful look into how relationships functioned among the white middle class youth in Texas during the latter half of the 19th century. Browse our exhibit “Social Graces on the Texas Frontier: The Lizzie Johnson Papers” for an in-depth exploration of this topic.

You can also find these items on the University of North Texas's Portal to Texas History.

Description
An account of the resource
Claud Carr Cody was born in Georgia and got his AB and MA degrees from Emory in 1875 and 1878. He came to Southwestern University in 1879 as Professor of Mathematics and stayed here until his retirement in 1915. During his time at Southwestern, he served different administrative positions, including two times as President. His most important contribution to Southwestern was, perhaps, his struggle in 1910-11 to keep the university in Georgetown when a proposal came to move it to Dallas. Southwestern University Special Collections guards many of his documents related to his personal, academic, and university life. This digital collection highlights documents in relation to his visit to Battle Creek Sanitarium, a very famous health resort in Michigan run by the controversial Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. The Sanitarium evolved from a health center sponsored by the Seventh-Day Adventists in the early nineteenth century. By the early 1910s, the Sanitarium had become health resort that advocated, almost religiously, a health regime based on a healthy diet, exercise, sexual abstinence, good sleep, and traditional and novel therapies such as hydrotherapy, phototherapy, thermotherapy, electrotherapy, and exposure to fresh air. Documents from Cody’s visit to the Sanitarium include Harvey Kellogg’s booklet “The Simple Life in a Nutshell”, an appointment card, a registration card, several bills, an examination of urine, a prescribed diet menu, and 8 checks. Students in the Popularizing Class, Spring 2016, generated the descriptions of the items in this collection.

Description
An account of the resource
Bills or receipts from C.C. Cody's stay at the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan that present the types of treatments available, prescribed to C.C. Cody himself, as well as the pricing of these services. The weekly bills were printed on long, thin sheets of paper. The artifacts resemble a modern day receipt in that they provide a list of services or products purchased by an individual as well as the price of that service or product. The bills were uniformly made and cover a range of services from general exams to kindergarten. The bills function as a way for the treasurer to keep track of the number of charges for each of Battle Creek’s customers. The services lifted on the bill are broken down into subsections: General Exam, Treatment of, Extra Bath Treatment, Treatment at Dr. Kellogg’s Office, Operations, Massage, Meals, Pharmacy, Sewing, Livery, and Books. Running vertically along the side of each bill there is a statement printed in capitalized red ink that reads, “BILLS PAYABLE WEEKLY (ON MONDAY) G.H. MURPHY, Treasurer”, along the opposite side of the bill reads, “PLEASE REPORT ERRORS TO CASHIER'S OFFICE IMMEDIATELY”, and finally at the bottom of the bill there is a small saying in red, “All arrangements pertaining to prices, and business arrangements of any kind, can be made at the Business Office only”. The balances of the bills located in Special Collection for C.C. Cody range from $14 dollars to $61 dollars per stay depending on the number of treatments and examinations C.C. Cody wanted to receive.
