Jim, Little Jim, Joe, Johan, John
Jim, Little Jim
Both Jim and "Little Jim" are listed in Reed’s ledger of daily slave activities and evidently performed outdoor labor. Outside of this document, it is presumed that both people are referred to simply as "Jim" (alternatively spelled "Gim") and it is difficult to discern two distinct people in the Michael Reed Papers. One Jim, ca. 1838-?, was sold as a slave by H.M McFarland to Michael Reed at age 17 for $1000 on December 22, 1855. A Jim was assigned a $900 value in Martha Reed’s estate inventory and was inherited by Wilson Reed upon the death of Michael Reed.
